Police prosecutors have preferred charges of criminal defamation against Mamadou S. Jallow, a provincial reporter with The Daily News newspaper.

This followed his arrest and detention by police in Bansang in the Central River Region last Friday, over a story published by his newspaper involving Chief Mamadou Lamin Baldeh of Lower Fulladou District.

Jallow’s arrest and subsequent charge stemmed from an article published in the newspaper, which cited an accusation against Chief Mamadou Lamin Baldeh, reportedly made by a woman rice grower in the region.

The newspaper report also stated that chief Baldeh denied the accusation as untrue.

Meanwhile, the police public relations officer, assistant superintendent of police Yerro Mballow, yesterday told this paper that Jallow will appear before a court, anytime from now.
