Janjabureh warm-up for Jai Saidy Memorial Tourney

The Vice-President of the Republic of The Gambia and the Minister of Women's Affairs, Dr. Ajaratou Isatou Njie Saidy and Malang Wadda, recently presented D12, 000 and D5000 to Janjabureh Sports Committee for the forthcoming Late Jai Saidy Memorial Football Tournament.

The President of Janjanbureh Sports Committee, Bamba Camara, said the 4th Edition of the Late Jai Saidy Memorial will be contested by ten teams.

According to him, the aim of the championship is to bring together youths from different communities to interact and foster unity and understanding among them.

He said a series of prizes will be given to the most disciplined team, leading goal scorer, best visiting team and the best player of the tournament.

Ten teams namely, Pencha Bi FC, S. V. Laar FC, Cambel Town FC, Leeds United, Cannon FC, Rangers FC, Safira FC, Culture FC, Nguma FC and Jokor FC lined up at the Serrekunda Lower Basic School football field for the annual Ramadan tournament, organised by Mustapha Drammeh, Programme Officer for Serrekunda East Sports Development Organisation (SESDO).

This year's tournament is named after the late Abdoulie Njie, former Nguma FC player, who passed away during his team's friendly game against Real De Banjul on Friday 18th June 2010, at the Seaview Football Field. He scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute, but collapsed two minutes later and passed away.

In the opening game of the tournament, on Tuesday 17th August 2010, Cannon FC defeated Cambel Town FC by 2-0.

Abu Njie and Assan Jawo scored Cannon FC goals in the 31st and 49th minuted of the game for their first win of the tournament.

In the Kanifing Estate Nawetaan, on the same day, Yourgf FC beat Blacka Production FC 2-1. Blacka Production striker gave his side the lead in the 23rd minute of play, while Muhammed Sanneh leveled the scores for his side and George Tamba sealed the victory in the 13th and 27th minutes of the second period.
