The
Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) on Tuesday distributed 111 bags of sugar to
the six regions of the country and to more than 500 communities in the Greater
Banjul Area.
The
sugar was given by President Yahya Jammeh as part of his Ramadan gifts to the
Muslim community.
Banjul
City Council received 10 bags, West Coast Region 12 bags, North Bank Region 12
bags, Lower River Region 10 bags, and Upper River Region 10 bags.
Speaking
at the presentation held at the council’s ground in Kanifing, Baba Drammeh,
finance director at SIC, said the holy month of Ramadan is a month of showing
love and care to one another.
“This
is not a surprise from the president in the sense that it has become a
tradition that every year he gives surprise packages to the entire country
during the holy month of Ramadan,” he said.
Imam
Sankung Touray of Brikama expressed appreciation and praised President Jammeh
for his “kind gesture in helping humanity”.
Ebrima
Jarju, 2nd vice president of SIC, called on people to increase their efforts in
praying to Allah and seeking His forgiveness.
Cherno
Darboe, assistant secretary of SIC, commended President Jammeh for his
foresight and care and love for humanity.
He
said the president has been very supportive to the council calling on Gambians
to praise the president for he have the country at heart.
