The Brikama Magistrates' Court recently convicted and sentenced Abdoulie Keita, a resident of Salagi Layout, to a fine of D1,000 in default to serve three months in prison, for stealing four pieces of iron rods.
Keita pleaded guilty before Magistrate Babucarr Secka for stealing the said pieces of iron rods valued at D700.
The facts of the case as presented by the police prosecutor, Sub-Inspector Jammeh, revealed that on 30 September 2010, the complainant, Mariama Sanyang, placed the rods at her backyard and went to work.
"The convicted person entered her compound and said he was looking for job; he saw the four pieces of rods and dragged them out," Mr Jammeh explained.
He also said the maid who was inside the house heard a noise and when she came out, she saw the accused person with the rods. He added that the maid then shouted and the convict was apprehended and taken to Old Yundum Police Station.
In his plea of mitigation, the convicted person begged the court to temper justice with mercy on him, saying he used to work for the complainant, who had to pay him D600 but had refused to do so.
