Abuko Lower Basic School girls football team beat Tallinding Annex 4-3 in a penalty shootout to join the Serrekunda East Women’s football team in celebrating the first-ever Women and Sports Festival Football tournament title in the finals played at Serekunda East Mini stadium at the weekend.

East who enjoyed a 2-nil success over bronze medalists Bakau in the semi final to set the meeting with Serekunda West, won the competition thanks to a penalty shootout victory over their Serrekunda West counterparts.

Abuko Upper won the Upper Basic category thanks to their success over Latrikunda Upper Basic School, earlier on Saturday.

Yamundaw Jeng put West ahead less than one minute into the clock when she fired home a low shot past the opponent’s gloves, to send her colleagues into jubilation.

But that joyous moment could only last for few minutes, after Isha Saidykhan leveled the score for the East outfit from a brilliant long distance free-kick.

Each participating team walked away with a set of Jerseys, 10 footballs among other equipment, while each of the two main winners received a giant trophy plus football equipment in recognition of their outstanding performance in the two-week tourney.

The twelve-team football tournament was designed to promote women in football, and ended in total success according to officials of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), who were the co-organizers of the festival in collaboration with the Gambia Football Association (GFA).
