Handbag thief jailed

The Brikama Magistrates' Court recently convicted and sentenced one Babucarr Jaiteh of Lamin Village to a mandatory jail term of three months with hard labour of the offence of stealing.

According to the facts of the case as narrated by the prosecuting officer, Sgt 413 Sanyang, it happened on 17 March 2010, at Lamin village.

He said the convict went into the compound of the complainant and asked the maid, one Amie Jassey, the whereabouts of the complainant.

Amie Jassey, the prosecutor narrated, told the convict that the complainant had gone to work, adding that the convict then went into the bedroom of the complainant.

Sgt 413 Sanyang further narrated that the convict was found there by one Isatou Saidy, who asked the convict about the complainant and he told her that he did not see the complainant.

According to the prosecution's narration, the said Isatou Saidy placed her bag in the bedroom of the complainant and went to meet Amie Jassey, adding that on her return to the bedroom she did not find her bag there.

The bag, the prosecutor revealed, contained neckless, body spray and padlock, adding that it was then Amie Jassey called the complainant, Muhammed Jacup, and informed him what the accused did.

He said the accused was later arrested with the items, except the neckless, and taken to the Old Yundum Police Station.
