German Sports experts set to develop school sports

Apr 7, 2010, 4:08 PM

Two German sport officials: Walter Abmayr and Hans Peter Thumm from the German Olympic Sports Federation are currently in The Gambia training 40 Physical Education Teachers on the development of sports in schools.

In an interview with Pointsport yesterday Mr. Abmayr stated that their mission to the country is to strengthen the existing co-operation between the German Olympic Sports Federation and their Gambian counterparts, adding that the co-operation was established in 2008 during the Beijin Olympic games when Mrs. Beatrice Allen, a member of International Olympic Committee and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Sheriff Gomez met the President of the German Olympic Committee.

He said the aim of the training is to bring sports back to the primary school, adding that the basic foundation of sports development is the youth.

He noted that one of the things they had observed during the training is the lack of enough equipment and materials for sports personnel.

He urged the government to make good use of the Cuban coaches in different sporting disciplines.

He also urged the government to assist and build infrastructures or develop sporting infrastructures to standards, noting that "The Gambia has a greater potential in the area of sports, and all what they need is support," he added.

The training, which began March 29, will end on 8 April 2010, at the Independence Stadium.
