Gamtel paired with Serrekunda United in FA Cup semis

Jun 14, 2013, 12:00 PM

The reigning FA Cup champions Gamtel will clash with second tier side Serrekunda United in the 2013 Gambia Football Federation (GFF) FA Cup semifinal after winning their quarterfinal ties at the weekend.

Gamtel, who have won FA Cup title three consecutive times, have sailed to the semifinal as they thumped Brikama United 2-0 in the quarterfinal and will be expecting a win to keep their chance of retaining the FA Cup title for four consecutive times.

For Serrekunda United this is their first appearance in the FA Cup semifinal after beating Real De Banjul 1-0 in the quarterfinal and will also be hoping for a win to qualify for the final for the first time in their history. They are also fighting tooth and nail for promotion to the top tier next season.

The 2009 FA Cup winners, Young Africans, will play against Seaview in the other semifinal fixture. Both sides are currently struggling second from bottom and bottom-place with 21 and 18 points respectively in nineteen games in the 2012-2013 (GFF) first division league and will be hoping to win their remaining games to stay in first division next season.

Young Africans won the FA Cup title back in 2009 and qualified for the semifinal after beating Hawks 1-0 in the quarterfinal and since 2009 they have failed to deliver to expectations in the previous FA Cup competition. Seaview’s performance in FA Cup competitions in previous years was not impressive, even though they have now qualified for the FA Cup semifinal following their 3-1 penalty shootout win over Steve Biko in the quarterfinal after a goalless draw in the regulation time.

They will come all out for victory against Young Africans to seal a place in the final. The date for the FA Cup semifinals will be announced later by the Gambia Football Federation.
