FA Cup champions Gamtel have been crowned champions of the GFA Super Cup competition following their 3-1 post-match penalty shootout win over league champions Brikama United, after their encounter of 120 minutes ended goalless at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium on Saturday.
The Super Cup marked the curtain raiser of the 2011-2012 GFA national division one league, in which both sides put up stunning performance and created numerous goal chances against each other.
Gamtel opened the score in the 10th minute of the game through a superb header by prolific striker Assan Ceesay from Alie Sowe’s cross from the right side of the field.
Brikama United fought back and levelled the score through striker Foday Trawally in the 42nd minute of the game from Bakary Daffeh’s cross, which the West Coast Region giant capitalised on to bring the first half of the match to1-1.
When actions resumed in the second half, both side brought in fresh legs and continued to threaten each other’s goal mouth but the 90 minutes of the game failed to produce a winner, taking the encounter into an extra-time, which also failed to settle the matter.
This pushed the game into a post-match penalty shootout that ended 3-1 in favour of Gamtel.
As champions of the Super Cup, Gamtel were crowned with a giant trophy and a cash prize of D30,000, whilst Brikama United received D20,000 as runners-up.
