Two Gambian women referees were recently recognised by FIFA as part of the intentional female referees in the continent.

Central referee Mariatou Jobarteh and her assistant Isatou Bah, alias Lama, were officially given the Fifa Badge that will enable them to officiate both CAF and FIFA matches locally and internationally.

Mariatou Jobarteh says she is very happy to receive a badge because of the hard times she has gone through since she began her career in 2000. She later attended a referee course organised by Fifa 2002.

She now officiates second division matches in the men and female leagues in both second and first division matches.

Both ladies were one time winners of the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia’s Referee of the Year award.
