Gambia clinches top spot in AFCON qualifiers

Gambia senior national team; the Scorpions have clinched top spot in the group D of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after lifting 4 points in two group matches.

Coach Tom Saintfiet and his charges won one match after thrashing Angola 3-1 in their opening qualifiers played in Luanda, last Wednesday.

The Scorpions drew 2-2 with Democratic Republic of Congo in their second game, played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Monday to maintain their unbeaten run in the continent’s biggest football showpiece qualifiers.

Gambia will now play away to Gabon on 31 August in Libreville and will compete to grip the significant three points to keep their lead in group D of the qualifiers.

Gabon are occupying second-place in group D of the qualifiers with 4 points following their goalless stalemate with Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening group game before beating Angola 2-1 in their second group match.

Democratic Republic of Congo are third-place with 2 points after drawing their two group opening matches and Angola  with zero points following their 3-1 home defeat to Gambia and 2-1 away defeat to Gabon.
