A three-day annual athletics championship organised by the Gambia Athletics Association (GAA) will commence tomorrow, Thursday 23 through 25 June 2011, at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The championship will bring together service teams, institutions and schools expected to compete in various events during the championship.

The Gambia Athletics Association will use the national athletics championship to scout out for good athletes that will represent the country in the 2012 London Olympic Games and other international competitions, the GAA officials have said.

In an interview with reporters on Monday afternoon at the Independence Stadium in Bakau prior to the big event, head coach of Saint Augustine’s Senior Secondary School Athletics team, Momodou Njie, said his athletes “are preparing very well” ahead of the national championship.

He is therefore hopeful that his athletes will certainly put up a respectable performance in the championship.

Njie used the occasion to appeal to the private sector and other stakeholders to support the young and talented athletes.
