France’s Charge De Affairs to The Gambia, Jeom Marc Transon, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, Hon. Abdoulie Bojang.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Joem Marc Transon said he visited the Speaker to remind him of the invitation extended to him by the President of the French Senate, to visit France in April/ May 2011 the actual date of which will be communicated to the two parliaments through diplomatic channels.

His visit to the National Assembly Speaker of The Gambia will strengthen the relationship between the National Assemblies of The Gambia and France, he said adding that in September 2010, for the first time, French Senator and a delegation of parliamentarians visited The Gambia.

“Already there is link between the two parliaments,” he said that the Parliament of The Gambia know what they need while the France Parliament also know what they can offer”.

He said there must be mutual discussion between the two parliaments to strengthen their link. He added that he would do all what he can to ensure there is fruitful link between the two parliaments.

Asked about the response from the Gambia National Assembly Speaker, Mr Transon said the Speaker was very happy about his visit and the increasing cordial relationship between the two legislative bodies. “The link must be strong, because parliament is the voice of the people,” he said.

He said Gambia is an English-speaking ‘island’ in the middle of a French-speaking ‘ocean’, which means they need each other.
