Four people were yesterday paraded before Magistrate Samsideen Conteh of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court, and charged with trafficking in person.

The accused persons are Ali Fneiche, Sulayman Bojang, Momodou Bojang and Alasan Jallow, but only the third accused person, Momodou Bojang, appeared before the court; the rest of the accused persons were said to be at large.

Momodou Bojang was granted bail of D250,000 with a Gambian surety who must deposit his or her national identification card with the registrar of the court, and must have property worth D250,000 within the Greater Banjul Area.

The bail condition further stipulated that the accused person should be reporting to the police station every Monday.

In Count one, the state accused Ali Fneiche that between January and December 2014 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, he recruited 19 Gambian girls to be taken to Lebanon for the purpose of exploitation, and thereby committed an offence.

Count two stated that Ali Fneiche between January and December 2014 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, transported 19 Gambia girls to Lebanon for the purpose of exploitation, and thereby committed an offence.

Count three further stated that Ali Fneiche between January and December 2014 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, received 19 Gambian girls from The Gambia to be taken to Lebanon for the purpose of exploitation, and thereby committed an offence.

Count four stated that Ali Fneiche between January and December 2014 in Banjul and diverse places in the Gambia, transferred 19 Gambian girls from the Gambia to Lebanon for the purpose of exploitation, and thereby committed an offence.

Count 5 stated that Sulayman Bojang, Momodou Bojang and Alasan Jallow, between January and December 2014 in Banjul and diverse places in The Gambia, acted as intermediary for the purpose of human trafficking by participating in the recruitment of some Gambian girls to be taken to Lebanon for the purpose of exploitation, and thereby committed an offence.

The state counsel, Mamour Jobe, told the court that the first, second and fourth accused persons were at large and the state was applying for the court to issue a bench warrant for their arrest in order for them to face trial.

He said the whereabouts of the other accused persons is unknown to the state, and urged the court to issue a bench warrant for the police to be able to locate them wherever they may be so they could be brought before the court to face trial.

The case was adjourned, pending the arrest and appearance in court of the accused persons.
