The Brikama Magistrates' Court recently convicted and sentenced one Abdoulie Saidy, a resident of Tujereng village, to six months in prison for escaping from lawful custody.
According to the facts as narrated by the police prosecutor, Sgt Colley, it happened on 21 September 2010 when the convict was arrested and detained at the Tujereng Police Station for allegedly stealing from a dwelling house.
He said the convict forcefully opened the door and ran away, but was apprehended by the chasing police officers. Subsequently, he was cautioned and charged with the offence.
In his plea of mitigation, the convicted person begged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying that he tried to escape because of the hardship he encountered in the police cell.
Meanwhile, the case for stealing from a dwelling house was adjourned to 11 October 2010 for continuation.
