Education is wealth

Sep 30, 2010, 12:58 PM

Education is the pillar of any country, and the prospects of any developing nation entirely depend on its elites and workforce.

Thus plans are at an advanced stage for this year's Road to Awareness fundraising drive by Sheraton Gambia Hotel and Spa for UNICEF UK, which seeks to raise US$200,000 to support the education of orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa.

The fundraising event, which is part of the School for Africa Programme established in 2004 by UNICEF in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Hamburg Society, seeks to promote quality education for all children at the basic level.

This includes those living in extreme poverty and remote villages as well as those who have been orphaned by AIDS.

The initiatives taken by UNICEF, UK and the Nelson Mandela Foundation and partners should be applauded by everyone, because the education of our young ones should be our main priority.

In Africa, sometimes parents would want to give their children the best education they deserve, but due to poverty, at times it becomes a problem to achieve such dreams.

The fundraising should be supported wholeheartedly by all the African countries to address the educational needs of the African child.

Let us work together to build a highly educated nation for the betterment of the children of the continent.
