Brikama United winger Ebou Kanteh’s 23rd minute strike helped The Gambia to a slender 1-0 victory over Mauritania in an international friendly game played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Friday.

The international friendly was part of tThe Gambia and Mauritania’s preparations for the 2017 African Nations Cup, as well as the CHAN competition qualifiers set for later this year.

The visitors made an astonishing start to the game and launched some occasional goal-scoring opportunities, but failed to capitalize on them.

The host, who were unable to established themselves in the game, opened the scores through Brikama United winger Ebou Kanteh in the 23rd minute of the game, after capitalizing on Mauritania’s defensive blunder to fire home the opener, which eventually proved to be the winner for The Gambia.

Nuha Barrow could have extended the lead for The Gambia in the 25th minute of the game, but his shot was denied by Mauritania’s goal-post custodian Ibrahim Sulaiman.

The visitors responded back for an equalizer, and came close to leveling the scores through Adama Ba and Ismaila Diahate in the 49th and 53rd minutes of the game respectively, but their shots were denied by Gambia’s goalkeeper Christopher Allen. Thus the game ended 1-0 in favour of the host.
