The treason trial involving Dr Amadou Scattered Janneh and three others could not proceed yesterday at the Special Criminal Court in Banjul before Justice Emmanuel Nkea.

When the case was announced, the presiding judge notified the court that the defence counsel, L.S Camara, had sent his medical certificate to the court, requesting for a four-week adjournment.

In response, the director of the public prosecutions, M. Abdoulie, told the court that the court could not be held to ransom for four weeks, adding that was not even in the interest of the accused, and urged the court to proceed with the case.

Justice Emmanuel Nkea, in his ruling, stated that having read through the medical report sent to the court by defence counsel of all the accused persons, and also having listened to the director of public prosecutions, the court was minded in the interest of justice to further have the case adjourned.

He then adjourned the case to 1 and 3 November 2011, stating that thereafter the matter shall be heard on a daily basis from Monday to Thursday.
