One Demba Sowe, a Senegalese national, and a resident of Farafenni town in the North Bank Region, who was charged with the offence of deflowering a 12-year-old girl, was recently granted bail by Justice Emmanuel Nkea of the Special Criminal Court.

The bail bond was for D1, 000,000 with two Gambian sureties with landed property within the Greater Banjul Area.

The development followed the application filed by his defence counsel, E. Jah, on the grounds that the offence was bailable.

However, the state counsel objected to the application on the grounds that the accused was a Senegalese national, and if the application is granted he could jump bail.

The trial judge overruled the state counsel’s objection, and granted the accused person bail.

According to the particulars of offence, between January and April 2012, at Farafenni Mauritani in the North Bank Region, the accused person, Demba Sowe, had a carnal knowledge of an under-age girl of 12 years old, and thereby committed an offence.
