D250,000 Bail for Alleged Drug Trafficker

Banjul Magistrates' Court has last Thursday remanded on bail one Assan Njai, accused of being involved in narcotic trafficking contrary to section 35 of the Drug Control Act.

The accused Assan Njai will now pay the sum of D250,000 to the court in order to ensure his release from remand and allow him to be returning to court for trial days. 
Mr Njai was arraigned in court last Thursday at the Banjul Magistrates' court presided by principal Magistrate Edrissa Fafa Mbai and when the alleged crime was read to him he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the particulars of the offence the alleged accused Assan Njai on or about the 23rd of March 2009 at the Bullock check point in Western Region of The Gambia was found in possession of 1 kilogram 280 gram of cannabis sativa, a prohibited drug and thereby he committed an offence.

The bail condition stated that the accused must deposit D250,000 or provide a Gambian who must prove means of the like amount and also deposit a leasehold title with the registrar of court.
