Cyber crime

Jan 23, 2014, 9:48 AM

The use of computers and the internet to harm others is becoming a cause for concern.

People complain of receiving unsolicited emails on a daily basis from persons they do not even know. These persons pretend to be someone you know, asking you for a favour such as financial assistance or giving you a business proposal.

Most of these kinds of emails are fraudulent. These cyber criminals are very smart in their dealings, and people should also be vigilant so as to detect them, and ignore them.

Our advice to our readers is that, whenever you receive such emails from unfamiliar persons or groups, that you never had prior correspondence with, you must be suspicious.

People should also be very mindful when making payments online, as well; sometimes it could lead to regret.

The cyber criminals do not only stop at sending people emails; they do search for people’s phone numbers through the blogs and websites, and start calling you for a business deal.

Please be smart, and never allow them to win you over with their so-called business propositions.

Whether you know it or not these people are regularly causing huge economic losses to their victims.

Thus, we advise you not to allow yourself to become one.

Another new cyber crime that is equally of concern to many people is the unauthorized use of a computer, which might involve stealing a username and password, or might involve accessing the victim’s computer via the internet through a backdoor.

This is a very serious crime, and people should start reporting suspected cases to the police. It is against privacy laws, and could put people at risk.

One should be very mindful of hackers, since these people also create a lot of confusion with people’s website contents, and also steal useful information from people via other unlawful means.

Our children should also be very mindful when using the internet, as there are so many bad elements using the net to expose kids to pornography and other vices or crimes.

Kids should endeavour to use the internet for educational purposes only.
