Havana,
March 9 (Latin Press). - Cuba today has a network of laboratories and the
necessary means for the diagnosis of Covid-19 coronavirus, a disease that has
already caused more than 3,823 deaths and 106 thousand 112 infected worldwide.
The
equipment was provided by the Ministry of Public Health and the Pan American
Health Organization, the director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine of
Cuba, Pedro Kourí (IPK), Manuel Romero, told reporters.
In
them, a diagnosis can be made for 17 viruses, such as Influenza A and B, and
respiratory syncytial virus, said the expert.
He
recalled that the increase in acute respiratory infections occurs more
frequently in the West Indian nation at this time of year.
“Other
types of coronaviruses that have nothing to do with Covid-19 are also
diagnosed,” Romero said.
There
are no confirmed cases in the country of Covid-19 said when calling attention
to the fact that as a respiratory infection, the population must be alert and
aware of their health care, and that of others, before the appearance of any
symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat and malaise, similar to
those of other types of flu that occur frequently in the population.
The
scientific institution - which will receive children and pregnant women - has a
total of 160 beds to face a possible scenario of the virus entering the national
territory, Romero reported.
He
explained that the plan to confront Covid-19 contemplates the creation of
isolation centers in all the provinces of the Antillean nation and clarified
that the samples will be taken from those suspects with clinical and epidemiological
criteria.
The
IPK -the director of the institution- also works systematically with different
types of communicable diseases such as cholera, dengue, Zika, among others.
