The copyright office is the government agency responsible for the administration of copyright in The Gambia.

The office was established in 2008 as an arm of the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), mandated by The Gambia Copyright Act.

Hassoum Ceesay, director of copyright at the NCAC, said the copyright office has envisioned to be a centre of excellence for the administration of copyright and related rights in The Gambia.

Mr Ceesay explained that the mission of the copyright office is to ensure the effective administration of copyright and related rights in The Gambia, and in collaboration with its partner, encourage and promote creativity to accelerate economic development.

Copyright is a basic right which enables creators of literary and artistic works such as writers, artists, musicians and software developers, to receive recognition, reward and financial support for their creative work as authors.

These rights enable them to authorize or prohibit the use of their works by others.
