Sulayman
Kuyateh, head coach of Brikama United, has reacted to his side’s withdrawal
from the 2017 CAF Confederations Cup.
Coach
Kuyateh was speaking to reporters shortly after the team’s morning training
session at the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium on Wednesday.
Coach
Kuyateh lamented that his side’s withdrawal from the continent’s second tier
football clubs competition was posted on social media Facebook in their league
fixtures against Steve Biko due to financial constraints.
Kuyateh
further lamented that his team had done their homework after winning the FF Cup
title last season, adding that the committee had promised them that if they win
trophy they would certainly be going for the continent’s football clubs
competitions but failed the committee in fulfilling their promise.
Kuyateh
stated that the players were not happy with the team’s withdrawal from the CAF
Confederations Cup, adding that the most of them have boycotted training after
receiving information that they were not participating in the CAF
Confederations Cup due to financial constraints.
Kuyateh
further stated that the players had done their work, noting that the former
committee were “totally committed”, saying the current committed “are not
committed”.
Kuyateh
revealed that their withdrawal from CAF Confederations Cup had killed the
spirit and moral of his players, noting that he was able to motivate the
players and ask them to forget about their withdrawal from CAF Confederations
Cup and concentrate on the league.
Kuyateh
further revealed that Banjul United, Wallidan and Steve Biko were supposed to
represent The Gambia in the continent football clubs competitions few years ago
but they withdrew from the competitions due to financial reasons and as a
result they were relegated to the second division.
According
to Kuyateh, playing in the CAF Champions league and Confederations Cup would
really improve the CV of the players and also expose them at the international
arena.
