Bissau National Remanded for Alleged Drug Trafficking

One Sana Saidy, a Bissau national, was recently arraigned before principal Magistrate Edrisa Mbye of the Brikama Magistrates' Court charged with being found in possession of prohibited drugs for the purpose of drug trafficking.

According to the particulars of the offence, on 4thApril 2008 at Barra Ferry terminal the accused was found in possession of 2kg and 540g of cannabis, for the purpose of trafficking. He denied the charge.

Meanwhile he was remanded in custody until the 25thSeptember 2008 when his trail is expected to resume.

In a separate but related development, Saikou Camara a drug squared officer also testified recently at the Brikama Magistrates's Court in trial of one Lawrance Ofiaqu, a Nigerian national.

In his testimony Officer Sanna Saidy told the court that on 4thMarch 2008 he obtained the cautionary and voluntary statements from the accused person. He said prior to the obtaining of the statements he cautioned the accused in the presence of an independent witness, which the accused thumb printed, the independent signed and he too signed as the officer who obtained the statements.

It will be recalled that the accused Lawrance Ofiaqu was arrested with 600g of cocaine at the BanjulInternationalAirport.
