The management of Brikama Area Council on 27 July 2011 presented cheques for D51,250 to 14 schools in West Coast Region for 49 sponsored students at a ceremony held at the Council’s office.

The beneficiary schools are Farabanta Upper Basic, Kafuta Upper Basic School, Ndemban Upper Basic School, Sangajor Basic Cycle School, St.Edward’s Upper Basic School, Fatima Senior Secondary School, Sibanor Basic Cycle, Brikama Upper Basic, Kabafita Upper Basic School, St. John Bosco’s Basic School, Mahaad Senior School, Pirang Basic Cycle School, Old Yundum and Jamisa Upper Basic School.

According to BAC’s public relations officer Modou Jonga, the disbursement of the funds is the second phase of the council’s scholarship programme for 2010/2011 academic year and it followed an earlier disbursement benefiting 83 needy students done on 14 June 2011.

He added that the payment of fees for the needy students is in line with the corporate social responsibility of the BAC, noting that the fees will complement the efforts of the government in making education affordable and accessible to Gambian children.

For her part, Mariama Bah-Saine, chairperson of BAC Sub-committee on Education, commended the council’s management for their efforts at supporting the education of needy students.

Whilst soliciting the cooperation of the school principals, Mrs Bah-Saine urged the beneficiary students to make good use of the opportunity given to them, as many are also in need of sponsorship.
