Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Brikama Magistrates' Court recently convicted and sentenced one Abdoulie Gomez to a one-year mandatory jail term. He was also ordered to compensate the complainant the sum of D4000 in default to serve another six months imprisonment.

The conviction and sentence follows the convict's own plea of guilty to the offence of assault causing actual bodily harm.

According to the facts as narrated by the prosecuting officer, Sgt 1179 Babucarr Camara, it happened on the 1 June 2009, at Lamin Village. He said the convict Abdoulie Gomez and the complainant Simong were sitting together in a compound when the convict called a girl who was passing and the complainant told the convict to stop calling the girl.

He adduced that during the exchange of words, both of them were angry and that they moved to another compound and while the complainant Simong was standing at the gate of the compound, the convict took a stick and a metal axe and hit the complainant on the head causing him injury. He said the complainant was rushed to Banjulinding Health Centre where he was treated, and a medical certificate was issued to that effect. The metal axe and the medical certificate were tendered in court as exhibits.
