Ageing with Smiling Initiative (ASI) a non-profit-making NGO last Saturday hosted a lunch for the elderly, at the Gambia Red Cross Complex in Kanifing.
Speaking at the occasion, Bala Musa Joof, the Coordinator of ASI said the aim of the programme was to bring together elders to do regular medical check-up on their blood sugar level, and to know their state of health.
Mr.Joof said that it is among ASI' plan to organise a lunch for different communities in the country, and to conduct health education talks for elders before the commencement of any health cheek-up.
He stated that the lunch was meant to appreciate the efforts of the elderly in society, noting that Ageing wth Smiling Initiative has come to support the elderly so that they would not feel being isolated in society.
For his part, the Alkalo of Bakau Keluntang Jaiteh commended ASI for the good move they have taken by organising lunch for elders, adding that the role elders play in society should be cherished by everyone.
Mr. Jaiteh also used the occasion to call on the younger generation to give more support to the elderly, and not to discriminate them when they reach old age.
Charles Thomas, also a member of the association called on the elders to always do regular exercise and not to make themselves older.
He commended ASI for organising a good lunch for the elderly.
The ceremony was well attended by elders within the Greater Banjul Area.
