Alh. Alpha A. Khan the chairman of the six-member committee on establishing a sustainable and proper framework for sports development in The Gambia has said this was a highly significant and a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to the sporting sector.
Khan was recently named chairman of the committee, which was inaugurated on Monday at a ceremony held at the board room of the Independence Stadium.
“It is common knowledge that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is currently engaged in the re-structuring and revitalization of sports in the country,” Khan said in his acceptance statement, while revealing the objective of the committee, adding that it is a significant building block that will contribute to achieving the over-arching vision of the ministry.
He said that the mandate of the committee included the formulation of a national sports framework document featuring core values of sports governance in The Gambia.
Also, “a comprehensive organogram and association description of national sports institutions, institutional arrangements for sports governance and administration at all levels, resource requirements and resources mobilization plans for sustainable sports development, and a national school sports program,” he continued.
Khan added that the committee will prepare an implementation plan and, during the period of their assignment, they will consult with all stakeholders to ensure that the emerging sports development framework is nationally owned and realistic.
“We have no illusions about the difficulty of the task, but with the prayers and goodwill of all, we can succeed,” he said.
