Alleged rape case sent to high court

Alieu Jawo, a Senegalese national indicted for rape was yesterday arraigned before the Banjul Magistrates' Court, presided over by Senior Magistrate Hilary U Abeke, who transferred the case to the Special Criminal Court of the High Court in Banjul.

Alieu Jawo was accused of the rape of an under-aged girl on 23rd February 2010 in Fajara in the Kanifing Municipality.

When the case was called, the presiding magistrate asked the accused person whether he has a lawyer or wanted the services of a lawyer.

Mr. Jawo in reply said, "I want to get one, but not yet."

According to the particulars of offence alleged, the accused person on 23rd February 2010 at Fajara in the Kanifing Municipality unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a child of seven years old (name withheld as required by law), and thereby committed an offence.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
