8 Arraigned for Alleged Theft

Eight people were recently arraigned before Magistrate Tabally of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on two counts of conspiracy to commit felony and stealing.

They are Buba Jatta, Buba Sarr, Sheikh Omar Faye, Mbai Colley, Oley Jatta, Alieu Mboob, Jali Kasey and Sanaibou Faye.

The first accused person, Buba Jatta, pleaded guilty of the charges and was subsequently convicted and sentenced.

He was sentenced on count one to a fine of D5,000 in default to serve three months in prison and on count two fined D10,000 in default to serve six months in prison.

Both sentences were to run concurrently.

The other accused persons were each granted bail of D25, 000 with a Gambian surety each, who must be resident of the jurisdiction and must also deposit their ID Cards and an affidavit of means.

According to the particulars of offence on count one, the accused persons, on 23 January 2011, at Lexma Supermarket along Kairaba Avenue, jointly and unlawfully committed a felony to wit stealing.

Count two stated that the accused persons, on the same day and place, stole items from the said supermarket worth D12, 750.

The prosecuting officer, 335 Nying, stood in for the IGP and the case was adjourned till 24 February 2011.
