The third edition of the fishing competition, organised as part of events to develop more products in the tourism sector, commenced on Saturday.
Speaking
on the occasion, Ousman Kebbeh, product development officer at the Gambia
Tourism Board (GTBoard), said the fishing competition is another product that
the board, in collaboration with stakeholders in the fishing industry,
developed and started three years ago.
“We
did this because we thought developing a product around the Tourism Development
Area (TDA) would diversify our tourism product around the fishing sector.”
Mr
Kebbeh added that the GTBoard collaborates with Gambia Maritime Administration,
Gambia Navy, the fishermen’s association, Department of Fisheres and other
stakeholders in staging the fishing competition.
He
commended the collaborators and sponsors of the competition.
He
also noted that the fishing competition is important in showing that the River
Gambia has different species of fish, and that The Gambia has other tourism
products other than the sea, sun, and sand/beach.
