With this new nature, sin ceases to be our master; we are no longer slaves to sin. We have been set free from its shackles.
As spirit beings, our primary nature comes from God in whose image we were created. As a result, our spirit man should take precedence over whatever we do or think. Sadly, the reverse has been the case. Our bodies have submitted to our souls and the desires of our hearts, making us slaves to sin.
With Jesus, we become completely different, changed from our fallen version. Henceforth, we are credited with Christ, associated with His righteousness. The sinful influence has been broken and the tables overturned as we cling to Jesus, the Only One, who has conquered sin. This is why Jesus was nailed to the cross; that sin would cease to have dominion over us. He lived on earth without sin. When we believe in Him, we also must have dominion over sin.
God saved us and called us to live a holy life. (2 Timothy 1:9) It may require a recreated spirit enabling us to live a full life. “… to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God--children born not of natural descent, nor human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John1:12-13)
