Youth and Sports Minister inaugurates new NSC board

Honourable Bakary Y. Badjie, the minister of Youth and Sports on Friday presided over the inauguration of the new board members of the National Sports Council (NSC).

The inauguration ceremony was held at the NAQAA Conference Hall in Kanifing.

The inauguration marks the beginning of a four year term for the council.

The new Council includes some re-elected members and reappointed. However, among the members are those who are elected and also appointed for the first time.

The National Sports Council was established in 2000 and started operating in 2001 with its office housed at the Independent Stadium.

Marcel Mendy, executive director reflected on the achievements of Gambian athletes over the years.

He said the inauguration of the board was geared towards promoting sports in The Gambia and paving the way for people to participate in sports in the international community.

Lamin Jawara, board chairman for NSC, described NSC as the tactical arm of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, noting that it is clear that the government of The Gambia is in full support of sport development in the country.

However, he called on government to partner with the private sectors and international bodies to further develop sports in the country.

Mr Jawara indicated that over the past years, The Gambia witnessed massive success in the sporting sector.

"This is evident in the country’s qualification for the African Cup of Nations and numerous participation in the Olympic Games," he said.

Minister Badjie in his remarks, stated the need for sports federations and associations to work together in achieving a common goal.

"It is the responsibility of the council to work with regional associations in order to overcome your challenges," he said.

He called on all heads of sport association to support the National Sports Council for the best interest of sports development in the country.

Meanwhile, the new board consists of seven representatives across the seven regions of the country including chairpersons of Regional Sport Committees and five nominated members by the Youth and Sports Minister.

The New board Members of the National Sports Council are as follows: Lamin Jawara as Chairman, Modou Njie, Saikou Sanyang, Jabally Trawally, Alagie Buya Baldeh, Lamin SL Darboe, Buba Ceesay, Sutay M. Jawo, Musa Mendy, Maimuna Sidibeh, Mariama Sallah,  Beatrice Allen and  Ebrima Manneh as members.
