King's Baton Relay starts in Gambia as Glasgow Commonwealth Games edges closer

The Gambia National Olympics Committee Friday held a press briefing to announce the beginning of the King's Baton relay in The Gambia, as Glasgow Commonwealth Games draws nearer.

The Baton relay in The Gambia started on Monday and would end this Friday. 

The relay is unifying and symbolic event,  where the Baton goes across the 74 Commonwealth countries, featuring many activities in each country that foster unity and enhance values such as friendship.

Second-Vice president of The Gambia National Olympics Committee (GNOC ) and chairperson of this year's relay , Bakary K. Jammeh, , stated that each stop on the relay highlighted the unique culture, traditions and heritage of the host nation.

Jammeh further stated that it promote mutual understanding and respect among Commonwealth peoples.

He described relay as not only a sporting event but a journey of connection, culture, and unity that brings the entire Commonwealth together in anticipation of the Games.

Jammeh revealed that The Gambia is once again honored and pleased to welcome the baton into the Smiling Coast of Africa for a week-long celebration of Spirit of the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games.

Under the auspices of The Gambia National Olympics Committee (GNOC), who double as Commonwealth Sports Association, the baton relay in The Gambia is already in high gear.

It will feature a series of high-level events.

The Gambia is the last country in Africa doing Baton Relay and would pass the Baton to Asia on Friday.
