The Coastal Town boys slipped to Foni 4-1 on penalties in the final of the 2023 West Coast Region zonal football tournament played at the same venue prior to their Super Cup final fixture.
Gunjur made an astonishing start to the match and created glorious goal scoring chances.
Young prolific striker Sheriffo Bojang alias Fixer could have opened the scoring for Gunjur in the 7th minute of the match from the penalty spot but his shot was saved by Foni’s net-minder.
Lamin Jammeh alias Buruno gave Gunjur the lead in the 17th minute of the match from the penalty spot after Foni player handled the ball inside the eighteen yard-box.
Foni responded back quickly for an equaliser and crafted numerous goal scoring opportunities but were wasteful in front of goal thus the first half ended 1-0 in favour of Gunjur.
Upon resumption of the match, Foni organised themselves and dominated Gunjur in the midfield, creating numerous goal scoring opportunities.
Sulayman Sanneh restored parity for Foni in the 62nd minute of the match.
This pushed the match into post-match penalty shootouts, which ended 6-5 in favour of Gunjur.
As champions, Gunjur went home with a giant trophy, medals and a cash prize of D15, 000 while Foni received medals and D10, 000 as runners-up.
