The African Peace Award recently given to President Barrow in Mauritania under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace has placed a big and significant mark on The Gambia’s image. To be declared the most peaceful leader in today’s Africa is indeed a great source of national pride honor and dignity of the statemanship of President Barrow.

The Gambian, by nature is peaceful, kind-hearted and God fearing. Barrow is an embodiment of this national character. Therefore, the Peace award given to him was well-deserved. Our profound congratulations to H.E Barrow and his family. While we acknowledge this award, we do not negate the fact that more work needs to be done for sustainable development in an atmosphere of peace and stability. The President himself has said that without peace, there will be no development. The need now is for the consolidation of peace for national advancement. The issues that tend to darken the image of the country and hold back the progress we are making as a country, must necessarily be reflected upon for corrective measures to enhance development and the national image. In this context, an independent body should be set up by the President to assess the performance of the various sectors of the economy over the years, in order to engage in restructuring, reorganization and system overhaul for a better country. Most importantly, the national issues which are of considerable frustration and concerns of the people should be tackled head on in this new year. For the government to remain development-oriented and sensitive to the plight, concerns and welfare of the people as said by President Barrow in his New Year address to the nation. Public accountability, effective service delivery and stronger governance mechanism can be impactful in changing the face of the country for the better. It will further strengthen the national profile and enrich the legacy of President Barrow. This is cardinal in a democracy and in political maturity. Looking at the President, it could be concluded that Barrow will be relentless to achieve his goals of developing The Gambia. In this regard, a government of national unity based on trust, loyalty, integrity, experience and technocratic competence is in my opinion the way forward in 2024 New Year and the logical answer to a peaceful and prosperous Gambia.
