In the streets of old Banjul,
where memories still walk beside the sea,
there grew a son of quiet distinction—
Dennis Carayol, steadfast as the tide,
warm as the evening light upon the city’s walls.
From the classrooms of Saint John’s Infants,
through Augustine’s halls of learning and discipline,
he carried not only books,
but the promise of service.
That promise journeyed far beyond home,
to the distant lands of the former USSR,
where he pursued the noble science
of Veterinary Medicine,
preparing himself for a life
devoted to the care of others.
And when he returned to his beloved homeland,
he returned not in pride,
but in purpose.
At Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services,
he worked with humility and diligence,
serving quietly where service was needed most.
From junior officer to trusted leader,
from Mansa Konko to the highest ranks of administration,
his footsteps became part of the nation’s progress.
Even in retirement,
the call to duty did not fade.
For wisdom such as his
could never truly rest.
Thus, he was entrusted again—
guiding the Livestock Marketing Board
with the same integrity
that marked his entire career.
Yet Dennis was never defined by work alone.
For he understood that life, too,
must breathe through fellowship, laughter,
and the joy of sport.
Cricket, tennis, soccer—
he embraced them not merely as games,
but as living stories of discipline, skill, and unity.
How remarkable his gift—
to remember players, matches, teams, and triumphs
as though they were pages written yesterday.
He spoke of legends as though he had walked beside them,
recalling names and moments
with astonishing clarity and affection.
On cricket grounds,
he served first as scorer,
then player,
then vice-captain,
and finally captain—
earning respect not through noise,
but through dedication and example.
Fielding with precision,
batting with calm resolve,
and later mastering the subtle art of spin bowling,
he became a treasured figure
in Gambian sport.
And yes—his beloved Manchester United
often occupied his spirited conversations.
With equal honesty he praised and criticized
Sir Alex Ferguson,
for true loyalty is never blind,
but rooted in understanding and passion.
Dennis was more than colleague or sportsman.
He was brother, counselor, and friend.
A man unafraid to speak his convictions,
yet always guided by faith and goodwill.
His devotion to family and religion
was not spoken loudly—
it was lived daily,
through kindness, service, and steadfast presence.
Within the Knights of Saints Peter and Paul,
he stood among the founding pillars,
helping shape its growth with commitment and vision,
bringing others into fellowship,
strengthening bonds of faith and community.
And now, dear Dennis,
the innings is complete,
the final whistle has sounded,
the score has been faithfully recorded.
You have run your race with dignity.
You have served your country with honor,
your church with devotion,
your family with love,
and your friends with unwavering loyalty.
Rest now in the Vineyard of the Lord,
where faithful servants find eternal peace.
Though we mourn your passing,
we celebrate the richness of your journey,
the generosity of your spirit,
and the enduring mark you leave behind.
Vale, Dennis Carayol.
Your name shall remain spoken
with affection, gratitude,
and deep respect.
Anthony Sang Njie, a mentee, younger brother, friend and admirer.
