The cordial relationship between The Gambia and the Republic of Türkiye has existed since the early 1990s. The unmeasurable support of the Turkish Government ranges from education, defence and security, training of several officers and soldiers of the Gambia Armed Forces, among others.
Major General Mamat O.A. Cham, chief of defence staff of The Gambia Armed Forces in receiving the materials at the defence headquarters expressed gratitude and appreciation to the Turkish Government for their continuous support over the years.
“This particular donation, which includes communication equipment is similar to several other donations that are equally donated to GAF on a yearly basis as part of the Cash Aid Protocol,” he said.
Major General Cham emphasised the importance and great impact the donated materials would have on GAF, noting that the equipment will align perfectly with their missions to safeguard the nation.
His Excellency Tolga Bermek, Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia said one of Turkish Government current policies is to contribute in international peace, stability and security.
The Turkish Government remains committed to supporting the Gambia Armed Forces to participate and contribute in international peace keeping missions, he added.
Serign Modou Njie, Minister for Defence said over the years, the Turkish Government has supported its Gambian counterpart with scholarships for students, free medical treatment of Gambians, provision of resource allocation for procurement of military goods and services, budget support to The Gambia Government, among others.
Hon Njie assured the Turkish Government that the donated materials would be used for its purpose.
