At least 100 personnel of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) received certificates last Friday, May 15, 2026, after successfully completing a two-week intensive Public Order Management course facilitated by the Turkish Gendarmerie.

Of the 100 officers, 65 were male and 35 were female. The training aimed to strengthen operational capabilities in crowd control, public order maintenance, and tactical response, in line with international policing standards and human rights principles.

At the closing ceremony, Assistant Inspector General of Police for PIU and Tactical Support Unit, Adeline Basangeh, acknowledged the longstanding cooperation between the Government of Türkiye and The Gambia Police Force, particularly in specialised training areas such as VIP Protection, Special Operations in Urban Areas, and Public Order Management.

AIG Basangeh described the training as timely and significant, coming at a time when the country is preparing for upcoming national engagements that require enhanced public safety and operational readiness.

His Excellency Fahri Türker Oba, the Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia, expressed appreciation to the Police High Command for the strong partnership and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to continued collaboration through capacity-building initiatives and technical cooperation.

As part of the ceremony, trainees conducted a practical demonstration simulating a real-life riot management operation, showcasing the tactics, procedures, and operational protocols acquired during the training.

Representing the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police for Administration, Ebrima Bah, commended both the trainees and facilitators for the successful execution of the programme. AIG Bah assured that the newly trained Public Order Management personnel are now better equipped and professionally prepared to respond effectively to incidents of public disorder, while ensuring strict adherence to the rule of law and the protection of fundamental human rights.

He also expressed appreciation to the Turkish Gendarmerie for their invaluable contribution and continued partnership in strengthening policing capacity within The Gambia Police Force.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates to participating officers and gifts to the trainers in recognition of their commitment and contribution to the programme.

The initiative forms part of the GPF’s commitment to strengthening the capacity and professionalism of its personnel through strategic partnerships and specialised training aimed at enhancing service delivery and promoting effective, accountable, and human rights-based policing.

The event was attended by commissioners from various police formations and units, senior officers, government representatives, and members of the community.
