Residents of Tankong Kunda in Sami district, Central River Region north, have voiced out their frustration with the poor state of GSM network connectivity in the area.

This, according to them, is a serious challenge that many are grappling with on a daily basis, as opposed to other communities that enjoy good stable mobile network.

For some residents in this community, the current network predicament is not only affecting GSM communication, but also hindering social interaction.

In a recent interview with our CRR correspondent, Ebrima Danso, youth mobiliser and a concerned citizen, lamented that this daily nightmare has also contributed a lot to their low income, as even those who wanted to venture into selling credits to make profits, have instead changed their mindset.

‘‘We have our families abroad and the only communication channel we can use to reach out to them on time is through phone. And sometimes when people want to make phone calls we have to go out of the village to search for a better network connection which is time consuming.’’ he explained.

He thus called on the government and GSM operators in The Gambia to help improve their connection in that part of Gambia.

Another concerned citizen, Saikou Tambajang, who is a shopkeeper and also a prominent businessman, expressed similar sentiments.

He commented on the poor network in in the area, which he believes, is one of the major challenges affecting the development of the community.

‘‘I am a business man and deals in mobile money services like -YONNA wallet, Wave app, My Nafa and APS wallet. I mostly deal with people who are outside of the country on daily basis, but sometimes I find it difficult to communicate and even do my transactions on time.’’

Being the only official mobile service agent in the village, who deals in sending, deposit and withdrawal of money, he believes more needs to be done to improve GSM communication in the area.

He thus called for urgent intervention, highlighting the challenges he sometimes goes through.

‘‘Sometimes when costumers come, I have to close my shop and search for network from one place to another.’’

Thus, he called on the government and GSM operators in the country to come to their aid and help improve GSM connectivity in the area.
