The association made this call during the commemoration marking the International Women’s Day at its conference hall under the theme ‘invest in women :Accelerate progress'.
“It is deeply troubling that members of the National Assembly are seeking to repeal such a law. FGM is a blatant violation of the rights of women and girls. We call on the NAMs to recognise and vote against the amendment bill seeking to repeal this law.” Said Yadicon Njie Eribo, The chairperson of TANGO.
She added that as they commemorate the day, they should recommit themselves to the cause of gender equality , women empowerment thus amplify the voices of women , support their leadership ,work towards a future where all women and girls can live with dignity , freedom and equality.
She pointed out that they should seize the opportunity and continue their important works in advancing the rights and well being of women and girls saying women have the power to drive positive change and create more just and equitable world for all.
She highlighted on the outstanding efforts of women around the country in various fields saying women are breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes and reshaping the narrative of what it means to be a woman in today’s society.
“As the theme of this years states investing in women which in all spheres can end the persistent challenges and inequalities that exist between genders; however, despite these achievements realised over the years, we cannot ignore the barriers that women continue to face including gender based violence, lack of access to education and health care and underrepresentation in leadership positions.”
She stated that as partners in development, it is their collective responsibility to advocate and support initiatives that promote gender equality ,empower women and girls.
“We must work towards creating a world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to fulfil her potential free from discrimination and violence.”
