According to his medical report, Muhammad has been diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the left femoral head, a serious complication of sickle cell disease. This condition restricts blood supply to the bone and has led to the deterioration of his hip joint, causing excruciating pain and loss of mobility. While he currently relies on folic acid and painkillers, these medications are no longer effective for him.
Muhammad’s pain began during a dangerous attempt to migrate irregularly, known as “the Back Way,” while he was trying to travel through North Africa in search of better opportunities. As his hip pain worsened during the journey, he became immobilised and had to abandon the trip. His mother went to great lengths to raise funds for his emergency return flight from Tunisia to The Gambia so he could receive medical assistance.
Today, Muhammad’s only hope lies in a total hip replacement surgery, which is a costly procedure that requires expensive implants. Due to his family's limited financial resources, they are appealing to the public, philanthropists, and humanitarian organisations for urgent assistance to help finance the operation.
This surgery would not only alleviate Muhammad's daily suffering but also give him the chance to walk again and lead a productive life.
