The meeting according to officials, is the first-ever since the establishment of the Supreme Islamic Council.
The meeting held at the Latriya Central Masjid, was aimed at strengthening unity and mutual collaboration among Islamic scholars. It also seeks to activate the role of districts and regional committees of the Gambia Supreme Council, thereby enhancing ties between imams in the regions.
At the event, Alhagie Essa Darboe, president of the Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) divulged their intention to decentralise their responsibilities by having sub-committees in Sanneh-Mentereng, Old Youndum and Busumballa Constituencies in Kombo North.
For his part, Ebrima Darboe, Latriya Alkalolu, spoke about their efforts in ensuring that Muslims in the country are united under one umbrella and speak the same voice.
“It is only us Muslims who can teach one another, support and advice one another for our own good and in the interest of the nation. We need peace, obedient and respect. Being a Muslim should not be in the form of lip singing but rather, it should reflect from our hearts.” he said.
He thus thanked SIC for the initiative and for choosing Latriya for the meeting.
Alhagie Muhammdu Salieu Jallow, Imam Ratib of Latriya Central Masjid, expressed appreciation and for his community to host the event.
For his part, Oustass Samba M. Bah, president of the Imams of Kombo North, equally thanked SIC for their foresight.
Samba-Binta Bah, Councilor for Jabang Ward, also expressed similar sentiments.
He urged SIC to empower imams in the country to be able to effectively execute their functions and lead their congregations.
