In a broader move designed to ensure public safety and comply with the law, The Gambia Police Force has issued a stern warning against people driving vehicles without un-authorized tints or number plates, which it say, constitutes an offence under the law.

Vehicles with factory-installed tinted glass are exempted from any fee. However, if the tint is reinforced, altered, or darkened beyond the factory standard, the owner must pay an annual fee of D15,000 to the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) before clearance is issued.

In a media dispatched, the police high command added that any vehicle not originally tinted from the factory must be inspected and certified before applying tint.

"An annual fee of D15,000 is also required at GRA before clearance."

Section 25(B) and 25(C) of the Motor Traffic Amendment Act, 2013 provide penalties for unauthorized importation and use of tinted glass, including fines between D10,000 and D20,000, possible vehicle forfeiture, or imprisonment with hard labour, it stated.

On the use of un-numbered vehicles, the police maintained that no person shall use or permit the use of a vehicle without a number plate and that offenders risk a fine of D10,000 to D20,000, or two years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

"Police will impound any such vehicle until proper number plates are affixed. A daily fine of D100 will apply until compliance. Regular checks will be conducted, and those found in contravention will be charged according to law."

It further addresses the general vehicle documentation, saying all vehicle owners are advised to ensure that their documents, including insurance, registration, and driver’s licenses, are valid and up to date.

"The Police encourage drivers to carry their documents at all times and cooperate fully with police officers during routine checks. Compliance helps maintain safety and order on our roads."

The Gambia Police Force seeks the continued cooperation of the public and reminds all that adherence to these regulations is essential for safety, transparency, and lawful road use, it concluded.
