MM Fanneh promoted to Professor in Economics

Peace Network has confirmed the promotion of its deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mustapha Momodou (MM) Fanneh to the rank of Professor in Economics at the University of The Gambia.

The promotion was in recognition of the outstanding contributions of Prof. M.M. Fanneh both nationally and internationally and at the University of The Gambia.

Prof. Mustapha Momodou Fanneh obtained a Doctorate degree in Economics at Fordham University, New York, an MBA and MSc. in Economics and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Transportation Engineering.

He was a Teaching Assistant and Senior Teaching Fellow at Fordham University and Adjunct Professor, Rutgers State University of New Jersey and Lehman College, New York.

Besides, he is a Professor of Economics and Dean, School of Business and Public Administration (SBPA), University of The Gambia and a Senior Trainer and Research Associate at Center for Policy Research and Strategic Studies (CepRass).

He also serves as a Senior Researcher and Trainer at Directorate of Research and Consultancy, University of The Gambia with more than 20 years of research experience.

His main research interests are International Trade, Development Economics, Macroeconomics and Monetary Economics. He worked as a Senior Transport Planner/Economist at the Department of State for Works, Communications and Information, The Gambia, 1996 – 2000.

He wrote several papers amongst them the effects of Structural Adjustment Program on poverty in Ivory Coast, and the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) and free trade agreements (FTAs) on bilateral trade.

He was a Teaching Assistant and Senior Teaching Fellow at Fordham University as well as Adjunct professor Rutgers, State University of New Jersey and Lehman College, New York.

Professor Fanneh has worked on multiple consultancies which include: UNFPA Consultancy on Participation of young people in politics, decision-making processes, and the impact of hate speech before and after the elections, 2022; WFP, ITC and UNFPA Consultancy Final Evaluation of the Climate Conflict; Strengthening the Coping Mechanisms against Risks Climate Induced Conflicts and to minimize gender related vulnerability and tensions in The Gambia from January 2020 to March 2022; WFP Consultancy on Climate-conflict inter-linkage in the Gambia, Peace Building Fund (PBF); United Purpose Consultancy on Reducing Micro Nutrition Deficiencies of Women and Children in The Gambia through Sustainable and Integrated Approaches to Food Fortification Study (Adoption, Diffusion, Consumption Sale, Price Trend) in Six Agricultural Regions of The Gambia); Action Aid End of project evaluation on promoting agro-ecology and eco-restoration practices in Southern Central River and North Bank Regions of The Gambia; Action Aid Baseline Study on Climate Resilient Sustainable Agriculture or Green Economy; Child Protection Alliance Baseline Study and Mapping of Relevant Stakeholders for a Pilot Approach on Tourism Sector on Child Rights in Business Principles;  MoTIE Study on the potential benefits and negative effects of AfCFTA on the MSME ecosystem in The Gambia; MoTIE Assessment and Development of Gambia Domestic Trade Strategy; Mid-term evaluation of The Gambia National Strategy for the Development of Statistics 2018-2022 (NSDS-II) for GBoS and Paris 21; EU-NEA Consultancy Development of Financial Protection Strategies for Disaster Risk Financing And Insurance GCCA+ Climate Resilient and Marine Zone Project for The Gambia;  Reviewer for MOHERST, National TVET Policy and TVET Diagnostic review;  UTG/BMBF Climate Change and Renewable Energy Feasibility Study in The Gambia;  developed Training Manual Development for Renewable Energy Entrepreneurship in The Gambia for GEF, UNIDO and UNESCO; Developed National Action Plan for Improvement of Environmental Statistics in The Gambia, commissioned by GBoS and United Nations Statistics Division’s (UNSD); Compendia of Environment Statistics for The Gambia, commissioned by GBoS and United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD); MoTIE Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprise Mapping for the Gambia 2018; Transport Policy of The Gambia, 2017; One Sight Intervention Programme (Consultancy for an Impact Evaluation in The Gambia); WFP Study on National Cost Assessment of School Meals Programme (February 2016); WFP Study on Cost Benefit Analysis of School Meals programme (February 2016); The Gambia-EU Cooperation Consultancy on Coastal Adaptation Designs (CAD) – Cost Benefit Analysis study (May - June, 2015); The Gambia-EU Cooperation, Consultancy on Coastal Adaptation Designs (CAD) – Social Economy study, (May - June, 2015); Action Aid Midterm study on Women Socioeconomic Rights in CRR (January 2015); Action Aid Baseline Study on the Socio-Economic Rights of Women In CRR (July – September 2014); GBOS Consultancy on Growth Drivers, Poverty and inequality in The Gambia.

In addition to his achievements, Professor Fanneh also initiated and oversees numerous graduate and post graduate programs in Economics, Business Administration, Accounting and Finance, Public Administration and Sectoral Analysis and Management of Education Systems at UTG.

He serves as a part-time Lecturer at Management Development Institute (MDI) and a research supervisor at West African Insurance Institute (WAII).

While serving as Dean, Dr. Fanneh has been an instrumental figure in the establishment of SBPA staff association that among other things provides loan facilities to faculty members; establishment of the Center for Policy and Strategic Studies (CEPRASS), which offers trainings for government agencies, the private sector and also conducts research nationally and internationally.

He served as the Vice President of the University of The Gambia Faculty and Staff Association (UTGFSA).

Dr. Fanneh served as Chairman, UTG-UNDP graduate Scheme, Chairman Development of the UTG Strategic Plan 2021-2025, Chairman, Bakau New Town Ward Development Committee, Co-Founder Peace Network Consultancy, Co-Founder Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students, Founder FKF Center for Policy Research and Consultancy.

Board Member CMAP-CPP Academic Advisory Board, African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), KENYA, Board Member (Commissioner) Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) and Chairman, Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI) and Graduate School Board Member.

Professor Fanneh is a Member for Development of National Research Policy, UTG Center of Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Senate Curriculum Committee, UTG Teaching and Learning Committee, MSME Policy Implementation Committee, MoTIE, member of UTG Training Committee, UTG Appraisal and Promotion Committee, member of University of The Gambia Contracts Committee, member of UTG Staff Training and Development Committee, Academic Coordinator and Lecturer, Sectoral Analysis and Management of Education System (SAMES), among a host of others programmes.
