A new era in The Gambia’s labour movement has begun with the official launch of the Federation of Labour Unions of The Gambia (FLUG), marking a historic step towards unified representation for workers across the country.

The landmark event, held at Paradise Suites Hotel, also saw the inauguration of the federation’s first congress under the theme: “Building a Just and Dignified Gambia for Every Worker.” The gathering brought together major trade unions in what stakeholders described as a long-awaited move from fragmentation to collective strength.

Addressing delegates, Interim President and President of the Gambia Transport Union, Omar Ceesay, described the formation of FLUG as a “significant milestone” in the country’s labour history.

“The establishment of this federation reflects our shared commitment to advancing the rights, welfare and dignity of all workers in The Gambia. Our mission is to serve as a strong, independent and unified voice,” he stated.

He noted that the newly registered body now has the legal mandate to engage government and stakeholders more effectively, adding that the congress would set the strategic direction for the federation and deepen cooperation among member unions.

Marie Antoinette Corr also hailed the launch as a defining moment for organised labour, emphasising the importance of unity and collective action.

“This congress marks the coming together of organised labour under one umbrella. Workers in The Gambia are ready to speak with one voice and act with one purpose,” she stated.

She added that the federation would advocate for fair wages, improved working conditions, social protection and gender equity, while urging members to remain disciplined and committed.

“This moment calls for responsibility and resolve. The decisions taken here will shape the future of labour in our country,” she stressed.

Representing the government, Minister for Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, Mod K. Ceesay, described the development as both“historic and transformative.”

“For far too long, the voice of Gambian workers has been fragmented. Today marks a turning point, as workers stand united,” he said.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to upholding workers’rights, including freedom of association and collective bargaining, noting that strong labour institutions are essential for national development.

“A strong, responsible and democratic labour federation is a vital instrument in any progressive society. It bridges the aspirations of workers with the responsibilities of the state,” he added.

FLUG brings together key unions, including those representing teachers, journalists, transport workers, farmers, bakers, tailors and maritime workers.

Its formation signals a major shift towards coordinated national advocacy, as workers seek greater influence in policy decisions, improved labour conditions and stronger protection in the workplace.
