This pledge was made during a recent five-day familiarisation tour by the nominated councilor for Transport alongside officials from The Gambia Transport Union GTU to all the major garages in Kanifing Municipality. The tour was designed to get first-hand information on some of the issues affecting drivers and commuters in the transport sector to map out plans to remedy the situation.
Speaking to The Point, Momodou Suwareh, alias Ma Suwareh, a nominated councilor for Transport at Kanifing Municipal Council, indicated that the major challenge faced by the commercial drivers within the municipality is that there is no central garage.
He said most of the places occupied as garages are rented lands, while some occupy the streets which affects the movement of both commuters and other drivers.
Suwareh revealed that KMC is willing to address the issue by engaging the central government to give out car parks fees directly to the council so that they can develop garages and the feeder roads.
He noted that they will also engage the central government to allow the council to collect car park fees directly and plough it back to the beneficiaries for the effective development in the transport system.
