The country’s Minister of Interior, Seyaka Sonko has advised Gambians to be ‘mindful’ in the way news of killing and murders are talked about and shared in the public which he said would depict the country in a bad light.

The call by the Interior Minister came along the lines of series of supposed killings and alleged murders, which went up to as high as six in September alone.

“Yes, what happened was unfortunate. We do not really think we should brush that under the carpet, but we should be mindful of how we say it, so that we do not paint our country so red that no one wants to come here,” he told journalists.

The minister noted that this will affect the tourism industry, which a lot of Gambians, especially youths, depend on.

“I think we should be mindful also that this is the only country we can call home. It is a destination for tourists. It is a destination for our people in the Diaspora who want to come here and enjoy their holidays.”

“So if we depict it as such a horrible place, who wants to come to a horrible place where every minute someone is killed?” he quizzed.

“That is why when we are talking about these things, we also point out that, these are happening, but comparatively, the trend is not as high as people say,” he said.
