The Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul has received medical equipment valued at £50,000, approximately D4 million, to support healthcare delivery at the country’s main teaching hospital.

The equipment was donated on Friday by Abdoulie Njai, National Assembly Member for Banjul Central, in collaboration with his partners, the Al Saaf Foundation.

The donation includes a range of essential medical equipment such as vital signs monitors, suction machines, defibrillators, electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, blood pressure cuffs and weighing scales.

The items are expected to support healthcare workers in monitoring patients, conducting basic medical assessments and responding to emergency cases at the hospital.

Speaking during the presentation, Mr Njai said the donation was driven by the desire to make a practical contribution to healthcare delivery rather than seeking public recognition.

He stressed that the value of such interventions should be measured by the impact they have on patients and healthcare workers.

“Pure intentions matter far more than public praise, and the gesture far supersedes the amount involved,” he said.

According to Njai, the initiative is not a one-off intervention, noting that he and his partners have been supporting communities through similar efforts for years.

“We have been doing such for years. Pure intentions matter far more than public praise, and the materials we distribute must serve their intended purpose and benefit the people,” he said.

He added that the focus should remain on ensuring that donated materials reach the institutions and people for whom they are intended.

The donation comes as healthcare facilities across The Gambia continue to require essential medical equipment to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.

At EFSTH, equipment such as vital signs monitors, ECG machines and defibrillators are important in the assessment and management of patients, particularly those requiring urgent medical attention.

The collaboration between Njai and Al Saaf Foundation also highlights the role that private individuals, foundations and community partners can play in complementing efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.

The beneficiaries are expected to put the equipment into use in support of the hospital’s medical services.

The donation adds to a growing number of community and private-sector interventions aimed at supporting public health institutions through the provision of medical supplies and equipment.

Njai and the Al Saaf Foundation said their continued support is intended to contribute to improving access to essential services and addressing some of the resource needs faced by public institutions.

The presentation at EFSTH therefore represents not only a donation of equipment but also a partnership aimed at supporting healthcare workers and improving services for patients who rely on the teaching hospital.
